What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is the standard placeholder text used by designers, typesetters, developers, and publishers to fill space in layouts and mockups when the real content is not yet available. It is also called dummy text, filler text, placeholder text, or informally lipsum.

The text begins with the well-known phrase "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — a slightly scrambled extract from Cicero's classical Latin philosophical work. Despite looking like Latin at a glance, it is not grammatically correct Latin; the words have been deliberately rearranged and partially corrupted so that a Latin reader will not be distracted by any meaning and can focus purely on the visual form of the text.

The primary purpose of Lorem Ipsum is to provide realistic-looking text density in a design. Unlike repeating a simple phrase ("text text text"), Lorem Ipsum varies in word length and sentence structure in a way that approximates real prose — making it far more useful for evaluating how typography, line spacing, and column widths will look with actual content.

The standard Lorem Ipsum passage — used since the 1500s and still the most widely recognised opening in design:

Why do designers use Lorem Ipsum?

The reason Lorem Ipsum has been used for over 500 years is that it solves a very specific and persistent design problem: how do you evaluate a layout when the real content doesn't exist yet?

When designers use real text — even draft content — in a mockup, reviewers inevitably focus on what it says rather than how it looks. They suggest word changes, fix typos, and critique the tone instead of evaluating the font choice, line spacing, or column width. By using scrambled Latin that looks like text but carries no readable meaning, Lorem Ipsum shifts the entire focus back to the visual design.

Lorem Ipsum is used across every major design discipline:

When NOT to use Lorem Ipsum: Do not use Lorem Ipsum in client presentations for non-design audiences. Many non-designers react negatively to unrecognised Latin text — sometimes requesting it be removed before the real design review can proceed. Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?

Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC)

Lorem Ipsum originates from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum — "On the Ends of Good and Evil" — a philosophical treatise written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The work examines the philosophical schools of his era, particularly Epicureanism and Stoicism, and debates the nature of the highest good and the highest evil.

The specific passages that became Lorem Ipsum appear in Book I, sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. In the original Latin, these sections discuss why a person might choose or reject pleasure and pain — the core of Epicurean philosophy. The passage containing the words that would eventually become "Lorem ipsum" reads in the original:

The 1914 H. Rackham English translation

The most widely cited English translation of these passages was produced by H. Rackham for the Loeb Classical Library in 1914. Rackham rendered the relevant sections as follows:

English — H. Rackham translation, 1914

"But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?"

Richard McClintock and the discovery of the source

For much of the 20th century, the exact Latin source of Lorem Ipsum was unknown — it was simply treated as unidentifiable scrambled text. It was Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar and professor of classical studies at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, who definitively identified the source. McClintock searched for the highly unusual Latin word consectetur — a word that almost never appears in classical Latin literature — and traced it back to Cicero's De Finibus. His discovery was published and subsequently publicised by the lipsum.com website, which remains one of the primary references for the history of Lorem Ipsum.

Letraset sheets and the 1960s popularisation

Lorem Ipsum's transition from obscure typographic curiosity to global design standard began in the 1960s. The British company Letraset produced dry-transfer lettering sheets — flexible plastic sheets printed with individual letters that designers could rub onto layouts. Letraset printed Lorem Ipsum text on many of these sheets, introducing it to a generation of designers across Europe and North America who encountered it in their daily work.

When desktop publishing software arrived in the 1980s, Aldus PageMaker (later acquired by Adobe) shipped with Lorem Ipsum as its default placeholder text. Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, and virtually every major design application followed suit. By the time the web era began, Lorem Ipsum was already so deeply embedded in design culture that it transferred seamlessly to digital workflows — and it remains the default today.

What does "Lorem Ipsum" mean?

The phrase "Lorem ipsum" is not a meaningful Latin expression on its own. It is an artifact of how the original passage was corrupted. In Cicero's original text, the relevant section begins with the words "dolorem ipsum" — meaning "pain itself" — in the context of the philosophical argument that pain is chosen only because it leads to greater pleasure.

When the text was scrambled for use as placeholder material, the passage was cut starting partway through the word dolorem, retaining only the final syllable lorem. The word "lorem" does not exist in classical Latin dictionaries. The phrase "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" therefore has no literal translation — it is a grammatical fragment. Loosely rendered, dolor sit amet translates to "let it be pain" or "pain itself, because it is," echoing the Epicurean philosophical context of the source.

The broader passage, when translated from the original, discusses the idea that no rational person pursues pain for its own sake, but may choose temporary discomfort in pursuit of greater long-term pleasure — a core Epicurean position.

When NOT to use Lorem Ipsum

Developer tip: When using Lorem Ipsum to seed a database or test a CMS, generate text with the word count that matches your production content requirements. If your article CMS enforces a minimum of 300 words, generate 300 words of Lorem Ipsum to test that the field, database column, and display template all handle the correct volume.

Frequently asked questions

What is Lorem Ipsum? +
Lorem Ipsum is the standard dummy and placeholder text used by designers, developers, and typesetters since the 1500s. It is derived from a scrambled passage of Cicero's philosophical treatise De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The text begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — a corrupted extract from the original Latin passage discussing Epicurean philosophy.
Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin? +
Not exactly. Lorem Ipsum is derived from real classical Latin but the words have been deliberately scrambled and altered so the passages do not form grammatically correct Latin sentences. The very first word, "Lorem," is not a real Latin word at all — it is the final syllable of "dolorem" (pain), cut from the original passage. This intentional scrambling ensures that no reader who knows Latin will be distracted by the meaning and will focus purely on the visual design instead.
Where does Lorem Ipsum come from? +
Lorem Ipsum comes from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), specifically sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. The source was identified by Latin scholar Richard McClintock, who traced the unusual word consectetur back to these specific Cicero passages. The text became a design standard in the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled it for use in a type specimen book, and it was further popularised when Letraset included it on dry-transfer lettering sheets in the 1960s.
What does "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" mean in English? +
"Lorem ipsum" has no literal translation because "Lorem" is not a real Latin word. It is a fragment of "dolorem ipsum," which means "pain itself." The broader phrase from the original Cicero text translates loosely to: "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances arise in which toil and pain can procure a great pleasure." The scrambled Lorem Ipsum opening is therefore a grammatical fragment taken out of a philosophical discussion about the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain.
Can I use Lorem Ipsum on a live or published website? +
No. Lorem Ipsum and all other placeholder text is intended only for mockups, prototypes, and development environments. Publishing placeholder text on a live website confuses visitors, appears unprofessional, and may be flagged by search engines as thin or low-quality content. Before every production deployment, search your site's source code and CMS for "Lorem ipsum" as a final check to ensure no placeholder has been left in accidentally.
How do I generate Lorem Ipsum in Microsoft Word? +
In Microsoft Word, type =lorem() in an empty paragraph and press Enter. This inserts 3 paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum by default. To control the output, use the format =lorem(paragraphs, sentences) — for example, =lorem(5,4) generates 5 paragraphs of 4 sentences each. Alternatively, use this generator and paste the result directly into your document.
What are good alternatives to Lorem Ipsum? +
The best alternatives depend on your context: Realistic English placeholder text works better for client presentations because non-designers can engage with it without being distracted or confused by Latin. Industry-specific jargon (e.g., tech or legal vocabulary) works well for specialised product UIs. Structured dummy data (fake names, addresses, dates) is better for data-driven UI components than unstructured text. You can generate all of these with our Random Text Generator.
Why does Lorem Ipsum start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"? +
The standard Lorem Ipsum opening begins partway through a word in Cicero's original Latin. The original text reads "dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" — but when it was first used as placeholder text in the 1500s, the passage was cut starting from the middle of "dolorem," leaving only "lorem" (the final syllable). This is why "Lorem" is not a real Latin word. The phrase became so widely known through 500+ years of use in design and publishing that it is now universally recognisable as placeholder text — which is its entire purpose.
Does this tool send my generated text to a server? +
No. All Lorem Ipsum generation happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server. The generated text, your settings, and any other data remain entirely local to your device. You can even use this tool offline after the page has initially loaded.
